Chronology

1956 Born in Palencia.

1975 I moved to Madrid where I prepared my entrance examination exams for the Escuela
.........Superior de San Fernando. This school later became the School of Fine Arts of the
.........Universidad Complutense, where I began my studies in 1976.

1980 Awarded a scholarship by the Rodríguez Acosta Foundation in Granada. I discovered light,
.........colour and Andalusia’s poetry painting around the Alhambra. From that moment on, I
.........became strongly interested in the theme of the figure in the landscape.

1982 I took a degree in Fine Arts by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Since then I have
.........taught in the field of visual arts.
.........The Provincial Government of Palencia, to study at the Institute Lorenzo de Medici in
.........Florence, awarded me with a grant. This period in Italy meant a great immersion in the
.........humanism aspect of the Renaissance period.

1983 I took part in a workshop given by Manuel Mompó at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in
.........Madrid. This painter influenced me significantly, in the way of depicting the figure in
.........the bright, and light atmosphere of the Mediterranean.

1991 At the School of Fine Arts, while doing my postgraduate course, I discovered the book
.........La Chambre Claire
by Roland Barthes. This book was written after his mother’s death,
.........and little before his own. It raised my definitive interest in photography, as a means of
.........expression, and a way of clarifying the interior and exterior life.
.........Mark Klett, photographer and professor at the Phoenix University in Arizona, exhibited
.........his desert photographs at Juana Mordó’s Gallery in Madrid. He also gave a workshop at
.........
the Círculo de Bellas Artes, and after attending his workshop; I began considering the
.........desert as the ideal background for representing man’s solitude before his destiny.

1992 Because of my interest in the person and his or her symbolic extension within his or her
.........environment, I went into deep on the theme of the figure in general, subject to light and
.........time.
.........At the Círculo de Bellas Artes, I studied with the American photographer Ruth Thorne
.........Thomsem, the transformation of reality through a pinhole camera. In 1993, inspired by
.........this workshop, I accomplished The Metaphisic Park, a work where I approached
.........the theme of the human fragility in the landscape, and his/her shadow captured on the
.........photographic paper.

1994 After obtaining investigating sufficiency, I began my doctorate on the reflection of the
.........environment seen through a camera. This study work began with a journey to Paris reflected
.........in a diary, Notebook of Paris, Photography without a Camera.

1996 My thesis work continued with a travel to North America, where I developed a narrative
.........and photographic project, Notebook of New York, in the Search of a Photographic
.........
Identity.
.........Following on the footsteps of Mark Klett, I visited Arizona where I travelled to the desert
.........in several occasions. At that moment, I became aware that the desert landscape was a state
.........of mind, and mirror of the soul.

1997 I began a period of stays in the desert of Almeria that ended in 2007. Developing a poetic
.........and photographic work called, Cabo de Gata, Beyond Reality. In this work I eliminated
.........all superfluous elements to reach a more intense perception of reality.
.........In search of the essence of landscape I travelled to the Far East, where I discovered the Zen
.........aesthetic, and its canon on emptiness.
.........I expressed the coexistence of people in the middle of chaos, and spirituality in my narrative
.........and photographic work, Journey to China.

1999 I travelled to the desert of Chile, and went back in 2008 and 2011. I carried out my work,
.........The Barely Inhabited Landscapes of Atacama. In this work I used the whiteness
.........of the salt as a symbolic background of the few figures that live in that inhospitable nature.
.........I took part in a workshop at EFTI, Photographic School in Madrid, where I meat Jane
.........Evelyn Atwood. I later visited her in her house in Paris. These encounters reinforced
.........my work, Portraits, Emotional Images. A work containing a gallery of family and
.........
friends portraits in their private environment, carried out from 1993 to 2015.

2001 I approached the theme of the presence of people in the landscape, paying special attention
.........to the messages they leave on the walls. This work was called Graffities.

2003 In my search for spaces of silence, time and light, I travelled to the Sahara in 2003 and 2004.
.........This new period of retirement to the desert reinforced my study on the person in an also silent
.........space: the photograph. This experience is contained in my narrative and photographic work
.........Egypt, the Look on Time.

2005 In my journey to Seville, I discovered the book Ocnos. In this book Luís Cernuda wrote his
.........childhood memoirs from exile in London. The reading of this book triggered an urban, poetic
.........and photographic work on childhood called, Seville, Interior City that I carried out between
.........2005 and 2010.

2008 Following the experience of returning to the city of childhood, after having read Luís
.........Cernuda’s book, I began my work Palencia, Return to Ítaca. I accomplished this work
.........between 2008 and 2011, and it is a narrative and photographic approach to the immigrants
.........return to their hometown, along the paths of Tierra de Campos. More than a nostalgic look
.........into the past, it is an exercise of observation through photography and narration. A look into
.........what I had in front of me in the past, but could not understand.

2010 The Zapillo Almeriense Metamorphosis work was the consequence of a previous study
.........on the figure, in my project about Cabo de Gata, a landscape that is very well known to me.
.........It was accomplished between 2010 and 2014. It is a reflexion on the evolution of this
.........neighbourhood named after an animal, and its urban beach. In this work the figures are
.........
represented in a bright and colourful surrounding. In photographing the trail of the
.........movement these figures leave behind I evoke their short life, and the impossibility of fixing
.........their image in an environment they scarcely occupied.

2013 In the year 2013, I was particularly sensitive to the great economical and moral crisis in the
.........South of Europe, so I decided to travel to Sicily to photograph what I considered to be a
.........symbol of the rising from the ashes. I accomplished my work Sicily, an Island of Closed
.........Windows
between the years 2013 and 2015. The surrounding environment seemed to be
.........crumbling, and the people standing behind the windows preferred not to look out or to be
.........seen. This work has been carried out following the classic concept of black and white
.........
documentary photography, to emphasize its soberness.
