Journey to China, 1997
I began this photographic and narrative work on the 1st July 1997, coinciding with the handing over of Hong Kong to the Chinese authorities. This work is collected in a book containing the notes of my journey diary, and part of the photographs that I took then.
The work simply consisted on observing the individual in his social setting, as I approached some of the topics of the Chinese reality at that time, like those of the relation between tradition and progress. All the images have been taken from a subjective point of view, and trying to avoid the topic approach of documentaries.
The decision of presenting the work on a square format was carefully thought, approaching in this way the oriental concept of balance between the human being and his environment, between the interior and the exterior of inhabited spaces.
